Another New Tango Experience
A new show is to open in la Sociedad Rural Argentina. It’s going to have
a lot to live up to. Already the location of the World Tango
Championships, the Belle Epoque stadium also hosts Opera Pampa (a
showcase of Argentina’s history with zamba dances and asados). Located
in the Frers Pavillion we are promised “An Unforgettable Experience” and
a “callecita porteña” – a little porteña street where guests will be
able to visit an environment populated with early 20th century porteño
characters. The experience may well be unforgettable, but whether or not
it’s good, original or simply a copy of the successful Boca Tango
Experience remains to be seen.

Health and
Safety Measures Cause Hike in Entrance Costs
In April a
number of prominent milongas were shut down in Buenos Aires after
inspections by Health and Safety authorities.
Although it took a while for milonga promotors and venue management to
agree who should fix the problems, all bar Palermo SoHo have reopened.
Patricio and Adriana have therefore moved their Wednesday night milonga
from Palermo SoHo to Club Gricel.
While it’s true that the undertaking of such inspections were not before
time, almost all milongas have raised their entry prices as a result.
Last year one could expect to pay between 8 and 10 pesos for a milonga
and around 15 pesos for a special show. Now regular admission costs
range between 13 and 15 pesos and some milongas charge as much as 20.
The difference in cost may well be insignificant to visitors, but for
local residents it’s a different story.
Many can not absorb the hike in charges are dancing at fewer milongas as
a result. This change in numbers may well change a milonga’s ambience
and the experience of those who attend. Is this the end of an era? Only
time will tell. CE |

Global Warming Affects Welsh Centre Tango
London’s
oldest tango club; Tango the Argentino Way, moves from its regular venue
at the Welsh Centre to Conway Hall for June, July and August. Chosen for
its air conditioning, Conway Hall will be more comfortable in the
summer’s heat (if it comes). This period’s classes are run by Los Ocampo,
Richard Manuel and Pauline Ribell, Bruno Tombari and Mariangeles Caamano
and David Benitez and Kim Schwartz.
